When Love Feels One-Sided in a Friendship or Relationship

Recognising the Shift

Sometimes, life places us in situations that smash us in the face. Asking us to reflect on how we value ourselves and our relationships. Recently, someone I’ve been coaching shared a deeply personal experience. One that spoke to the ache of feeling unseen and undervalued.

Looking back, I’d say this more simply now. We can care deeply about someone without pretending we know what is happening inside them, and without carrying both sides of a relationship. The evidence of how someone is actually showing up matters too.

Their story began with a quiet realisation:

“At first, it was subtle. The calls came less often. The texts went unanswered. Then, suddenly the silence became louder than the connection. I found myself questioning whether I was still a priority in their life or if I’d ever truly been one at all. How can they just drop me like that? Where is the love? Was it ever there? Or did I just make it up in my mind? Why didn’t they even care enough to talk to me about whatever it was that was upsetting them before dropping me like that?”

This realisation often comes with deep pain. It’s painful to see how much effort you’ve been putting into relationships while the other person easily gets on with their next things without a backward glance.

The Pain of Realisation

They continued, “It hurt to realise that, even after talking to them about it, no matter how much effort I put in to reach out and make plans they weren’t meeting me halfway. The hardest part wasn’t the silence itself but the clarity it brought. Looking back, I could see the pattern. I’d been the one keeping the relationship alive. And now, as I’ve stepped back, it’s simply faded away.”

Hearing these words, I felt their pain, but I also saw something deeper: the beginning of acceptance and even the possibility of freedom and joy.

Reframing the Narrative with Love

Quote by Jules Bodger: “You deserve relationships that nourish your soul. We can miss someone and still stop chasing them. We can care without carrying both sides of the connection.”

One of the most powerful questions we can ask ourselves in such moments is, Why have I allowed myself to chase after someone who doesn’t value me?

This isn’t about blame. It’s about honouring our worth and recognising that in healthy relationships love and connection flows both ways. Through our conversation, we began weaving the principles of Your Joyful Path.

This process isn’t just about letting go; it’s about stepping into a place of clarity and freedom. It’s about learning to stop and see what’s really going on in our life. Releasing what no longer serves us and aligning with what truly does. It’s about feeling our worth, regardless of any external circumstances.

The Importance of Present-Moment Awareness

As we reflected together, we turned to one of the core principles of Your Joyful Path: present-moment awareness. When we focus on the present, we can see relationships for what they are. Not as we wish them to be.

This clarity allows us to make decisions that honour our hearts, free from the binds of expectation or fear.

“I’m beginning to see that letting go isn’t about giving up. It’s about choosing myself and my happiness,” they said. “It’s about making room for relationships that truly nourish me. I’m learning that my worth isn’t defined by someone else’s actions. I deserve love that’s real and mutual. Only then can it be joyful and fulfilling.”

Creating Space for Joy

Their story is a powerful reminder for all of us: life is too short to chase after connections that leave us feeling unseen and unvalued. When we release what no longer serves us, we create space for the people and experiences that do really align with our hearts and bring us back to joy.

Your Journey to Clarity and Peace

If you’re reading this and feel a similar ache, know that you’re not alone. The journey to clarity and peace begins with small steps:

  • Embrace the present moment with an open heart.
  • Acknowledge the truth of the situation.
  • Release it with love and compassion.

The path ahead isn’t just about healing. It’s about rediscovering the joy that’s always been within you. As you walk this path, remember that you are worthy of relationships that uplift, nourish, and celebrate the beautiful soul that you are.
