The Weight of Holding Secrets: How to Set Yourself Free

The Unseen Burden We Don’t Talk About

Have you ever found yourself holding onto something that wasn’t really yours to carry? A secret or a moment that someone else placed in your hands with the expectation that you’d keep it locked away?

It can feel like an honour at first. Like trust. But over time, it becomes heavy. And the worst part? You can’t even talk about it, because, well… it’s a secret.

I know this feeling well. The quiet weight of something you were never meant to carry. The way it can sit in your chest, taking up space and making it harder to breathe freely. For so long, I thought carrying these things was just part of life, part of love.

Until I realised something: Love was never meant to be heavy.

Many of us learn this pattern young. Maybe you were the one keeping the peace in your family, making sure no one got upset. Maybe you were the responsible one. The one who had to be “mature” beyond your years. Or maybe you were simply put in a position where you had no choice but to hold onto something that wasn’t really yours.

But here’s something Your Joyful Path reminds us of:

True peace is not about carrying the weight of others. It’s about lightness, presence, freedom and Joy.

So, what do you do when you’re carrying something that weighs you down but isn’t yours to hold?

"Love was never meant to be heavy. It's about lightness, presence, and freedom." quote by Julie BodgerWhy Carrying Secrets Can Feel So Heavy

Growing up in an environment where secrecy was the norm (especially in emotionally charged situations like divorce, family tension, or being the “protector” of others like I did) can shape how we see ourselves, our relationships, and even our sense of safety. It’s no wonder that many of us who were put in these roles find ourselves:

  1. Becoming Masters of Emotional Suppression

You learn to push things down and keep a calm face. You tell yourself “I’m fine, it’s not a big deal. This is just the way it always is.” Except, spoiler alert: it is a big deal when your emotions don’t feel safe to express.

✨ Joyful Path Teaching: Suppressing emotions doesn’t make them disappear. It just tucks them into little emotional suitcases that get heavier over time. The good news? You can unpack them and put them down for good.

  1. Becoming Over-Responsible

When you’ve been trusted with secrets since childhood, you start thinking it’s your job to protect everyone from discomfort. You anticipate needs, you can often try to soften the truth and hold space for others even when no one asked you to!

✨ Joyful Path Teaching: You are responsible for your own emotional well-being, not for managing the feelings of everyone around you. You can care for people without carrying people.

  1. Struggling with Boundaries (Wait, What Are They?)

If you were raised to keep things quiet, it can be really tricky to know what’s yours to hold and what isn’t. You might feel guilty for saying “This isn’t my burden to carry.” But guess what? It’s okay to put things down. In fact, it’s necessary.

✨ Joyful Path Teaching: Healthy boundaries don’t push people away. They allow us to love more freely, without the weight of obligation.

  1. Feeling Anxious About Disappointing Others

When you’ve spent your life protecting other people’s emotions, the thought of letting someone down can feel unbearable.

✨ Joyful Path Teaching: The truth is, you are not responsible for holding others together. Your job is to walk your path in a way that feels honest and light. The people who truly love you will love you in your truth, not in your silence.

  1. Losing Touch with Your Own Identity

When you’re constantly protecting others’ truths, your own voice can get lost in the mix. What do you believe? What do you want? What do you need? What is in your heart to say? If you’re not sure, that’s okay. It just means it’s time to start listening to yourself again.

✨ Joyful Path Teaching: Your voice matters. Your needs matter. You are not just a keeper of others’ stories. You are the creator of your own.

  1. Avoiding Conflict Like a Pro

If open communication wasn’t always safe growing up, you might prefer to just keep the peace rather than say what’s in your heart. But avoiding conflict doesn’t make tension disappear. It just buries it deeper. But, it will always pop out of the woodwork, often at the most inopportune times.

✨ Joyful Path Teaching: Healthy communication is freeing. You deserve to be heard, just as much as anyone else.

The Difference Between Holding Space and Holding Secrets

There’s a huge difference between holding space for someone and holding their secrets.

  • Holding space means showing up with love and support, allowing someone to share their truth in a way that feels safe.
  • Holding secrets often comes with an expectation of silence, which can feel like a weight you’re not allowed to put down.

✨ Joyful Path Teaching: Freedom comes when we stop carrying what was never ours to hold.

Right now, close your eyes. Take a deep breath in through your nose and deep into your belly… and out through your mouth.

And this time, as you breathe, listen.

Tune into the sound of silence that follows your breath.

Not the silence of secrecy. But the silence of presence. The deep and peaceful silence that has always been here beneath the noise.

This is your foundation. This is Your Joyful Path.

Feel it and let it hold you. Let it remind you that you are not meant to carry the weight of the world. You are meant to be free.

How to Start Letting Go (With Love)

If you’ve ever felt burdened by holding things in, here’s how to start shifting the weight off your shoulders:

  • Reclaim Your Boundaries – You are not obliged to carry others’ emotions at your own expense.
  • Let Go of Guilt – You did the best you could in a tough situation. That doesn’t mean you have to carry it forever.
  • Find Your Own Voice – Whether through journaling or just pausing to check in with yourself, come to realise that your voice matters too.
  • Give Yourself Permission to Feel Lighter – Imagine carrying a backpack filled with all the emotional weight you’ve held for others. Now, imagine taking it off. You don’t need it anymore.

✨ Joyful Path Teaching: Lightness is always available to you. Joy is your birthright.

What Can You Gently Release Today?

Imagine standing by the ocean, holding a handful of sand. You grip it tightly, thinking that if you just hold on hard enough, it’ll stay. But the tighter you hold it, the more the grains slip through your fingers.

Now, imagine opening your hand and letting the sand just rest there, unforced and unburdened.

This is what it feels like to release what was never meant to be held so tightly.

So, what’s one thing you can let go of today?

Maybe it’s a thought or a small thing you’ve been holding onto that feels like a burden. Whatever it is, let’s release together. One deep breath at a time.

And in that breath… tune into the silence once more. That deep, sacred stillness that has always been here. This is your space of freedom. This is Your Joyful Path.

Join us and walk in freedom today. Because this is what joy feels like. This is what freedom feels like.

And this is your birthright.
