Finding the Still-Point of Your Attention

Still-Point Meditation

Here’s an inner stillness meditation that will help you tune in to the still-point within. This is the doorway to present moment awareness and your naturally happy heart.

As usual, the mind tends to have misconceptions, often the opposite of what’s true. In this case, it may create an idea of freedom as something vast, expansive, and out-of-body. However, the initial experience of true freedom is firmly grounded in the body, in a tiny focal point with no movement in any direction. This point will become smaller and more precise the longer you stay with it until the limitations of an unbalanced mind fade away.

FEEL

Entering the Still-Point

Close your eyes and let your body relax.

Feel the tension melting away with each breath.

With your eyes closed, focus on the inside of your eyelids.

Now, listen to the sound in your ears. It’s always here, even when you’re not actively listening to it.

Take a moment to make this sound clear in your mind.

As you hear the sound, your attention is drawn into your body.

With your eyes still closed, focus on the origin of your attention rather than where the sound is coming from.

RELAX & FEEL MORE DEEPLY

To help you connect with the source of your attention, try this visualisation:

Imagine a laser beam of white light entering your forehead between your eyebrows and exiting the base of your skull.

Now picture another beam of white light entering from the top of your head and traveling straight down to your chest.

This line passes through your head and neck.

The point where these two lines intersect is deep within your head.

Finally, there’s one more beam of light entering one ear and exiting the other.

The point where these three beams intersect deep within your skull is the Still-Point of your attention – the place from which your awareness arises.

Alternatively, you can imagine placing a finger in each ear until they touch. The point where your fingers meet inside your head is the still-point of your attention.

This is the gateway to deep inner calm and self-awareness.

FEEL

Anchoring Into Inner Stillness

Close your eyes, listen to the sound, and rest in awareness.

Feel yourself sinking into deep relaxation.

Stay with this stillness, allowing your body to let go completely.

You are firmly grounded in your body, simply focusing on the inside of your closed eyelids and listening to the sound.

Relax and sink deeper into this Still-point that the sound leads you to, while continuing to breathe and relax.

Now, stay in this state of rest and relaxation…

This is not an act of “doing” – it is an act of allowing. When you relax into the Still-Point of your attention, your natural state of peace effortlessly emerges.

Relaxing Into Your Natural State of Peace

The calm centre in your mind is not a physical location – it’s a point of reference.

To enter this state of deep relaxation and inner peace, simply relax your focus on the sound. Even with your eyes open, you can remain anchored in the stillness of the sound and periodically shift your focus to see your nose from the corner of your eye, until you become familiar with this place.

The profound tranquillity that lies beneath all aspects of life is your true and innate state. By resting in this stillness and allowing yourself to merge with the warmth of your compassionate heart, you will realise that you already know this place very well. This place represents the present moment.

Once you feel the presence of this natural peace, it is enough. By resting your attention on this single Still-Point, you open the gateway to your genuine state of happiness and spiritual awakening.

As you spend a few moments resting with the sound, you go beyond mere attention. Your body relaxes, and naturally, you surrender to the peace and unity that defines who you are.

Take This Practice Deeper

Stay with it for a little while and notice what, if anything, changes in your experience.

Spending just a few moments each day resting in this inner stillness meditation can transform your sense of awareness. You may find that your mind becomes clearer, your body more relaxed, and your heart naturally joyful.

A note from now: I use the Still-Point here as an attention practice and an image for something directly noticeable. I’m not suggesting that awareness literally begins at a physical point inside the skull, or that this practice guarantees calm, happiness or spiritual awakening.
