The Flow of Giving & Receiving
Life is a beautiful cycle of giving and receiving, a constant energy exchange between you and everything around you. This flow happens naturally as you create your life and feel its reflection coming back to you. When you close yourself off to either side of this circle, the energy exchange is disrupted, often leaving you in a state of survival mode rather than ease.
I use ‘energy’ here as ordinary language for the felt flow of giving and receiving, not as a promise that what we give will come back to us in a particular form. Giving, receiving, asking and declining all need room for consent and boundaries.
Why We Block Our Natural Abundance
Over time, judgmental thoughts and past stressors create a physical “valve” that limits how much you allow yourself to give or receive. In the somatic world, we recognise this as a protective mechanism of the nervous system. As you connect with your true nature, you become aware of this restriction. You realise you are always giving to and receiving from the same source within you. Once you see the valve for what it is, letting go of it feels natural, and the restriction eventually disappears.
The Joy of Expectation-Free Giving
Giving is a privilege that brings immense joy when done without expectations. It requires a generous spirit and respect for the recipient. When you tune into your heartfelt feelings, the need to hoard or collect fades because you understand that your heart is an unlimited source of abundance.
-
Live from Peace: When you live from the powerful peace within, you instinctively know when and what to give.
-
Embody Abundance: This mindset fosters true connection and emotional well-being by aligning you with the joy of life as an effortless expression.
-
Trust the Truth: Whatever you give, you receive. Trusting this allows you to live through an open heart.
A Simple Somatic Test: The Compliment
A great way to test your current flow is to notice how you handle compliments.
-
Giving Compliments: If you feel uncomfortable offering a kind word, practice unconditional generosity more often. It brings immediate joy to others and opens your own heart.
-
Receiving Compliments: Notice your bodily reactions when someone praises you. Are you tight? Do you dismiss it? Use these physical signs to identify unconscious blocks to receiving.
Reaching Out for Connection
You are a powerful, peaceful energy underlying all life experiences. Your “return on life” is directly proportional to your gratitude and trust. If you feel your intent faltering, reach out. Asking for help is a gift to both you and the person you ask; it gives you the chance to receive and allows them the privilege to give. In our often isolated world, every opportunity for connection is precious.
Practice This Week:
Try giving without expectation for seven days. Whether it is a kind word, a smile, any small act of generosity, and observe how life responds. Share your shifts in our community chat. I would love to hear about your journey.
