Why Being “Nice” Might Be Costing You Your Wholeness
So many of us across NZ, and the rest of the world, were taught from a young age to be “good.” We were praised for being polite, pleasing, or perfectly composed. But let’s be real: at what cost?
Today I want to share something close to my heart because when I first began my Joyful Path, I thought I was just tired. I assumed I was burnt out from trying to keep up with everything and everyone. But what I was actually carrying was the grief of the “good girl” I’d become and the quiet ache of forgetting who I was underneath it all.
This isn’t about a loud rebellion. It’s about a gentle return to your truth and your realness. It’s about reconnecting to the wholeness you’ve never actually been separate from.
She Was Always the Good Girl… Until Her Body Said, “No More”
That was me. I smiled when my heart cracked and said yes when everything in me whispered no. I shape-shifted into whatever others needed until I couldn’t feel myself anymore.
Being the good girl kept me safe for a long time, but eventually, it started making me sick. The body always keeps the score and mine did what all wise bodies do. It whispered, and then it roared:
🔥 Enough. 🔥 I deserve better!
And perhaps you do, too.
The Good Girl Archetype: Why It Feels So Safe
I didn’t realise it at the time, but being good had become my emotional security blanket. I wanted to be liked and to keep the peace. I did everything I could to avoid conflict or those awkward silences that felt so much like danger.
Does that sound familiar?
We don’t become people-pleasers because we’re weak. We become them because we were taught that love was conditional. We learned that our softness was “too much” or our truth was “too loud.” The good girl was a survival strategy, but she isn’t the key to thriving and she isn’t who you really are.
People-Pleasing and the Nervous System: A UK Perspective on Burnout
When I started unravelling these patterns, I didn’t just think about it; I felt it in my bones. I felt the tightness in my chest when I swallowed a “no” and noticed the smile I wore like a mask when I actually wanted to cry. I felt the guilt that crept in every time I let myself rest.
This wasn’t just a mindset issue. It was my nervous system waving a white flag. My Joyful Path helped me reconnect with what I’d buried and I slowly realised that my body wasn’t betraying me. It was protecting me. It was asking me to stop performing and start listening. Underneath all that noise was the memory that I belonged to myself and to life.
When Perfection Becomes a Cage
For years, I wore perfection like armour. I was always helpful and always “fine.” Isn’t that the word we use when we’re anything but? Underneath all the smoothing over, I was exhausted from holding it all together.
Then, it finally clicked: perfect was never the goal. Peace and presence were what I actually craved.
You don’t have to earn your worth by doing more or shrinking yourself to fit someone else’s comfort zone. You’re already whole, even when you’re messy or when you say no. Every time you choose truth over performance, you come back to yourself and to the wild, beautiful life that was never separate from you.
How Your Joyful Path Helps You Reclaim Your Authentic Self
When I finally stood in my truth, something fell away. It wasn’t a breakdown; it was a breakthrough. Twenty years later, I wrote Your Joyful Path from that place of remembering.
It doesn’t ask you to rebel, but it invites you to return. It begins with a breath and a willingness to whisper to yourself: I am enough as I am.
It’s about breaking up with perfection and letting your nervous system exhale. When one person softens into their truth, it creates space for others to do the same. That is the quiet power of returning to oneness. Here, you don’t have to be the good girl anymore. You just get to be you.
Always Remember
You were never too much and you were never not enough. You were simply never meant to live in a box built by someone else.
If this speaks to you, I see you and I walk beside you. Let’s start a ripple of truth and full-souled permission together.
