What Is a Heart Dog? Benjamin Bodger’s Story of Love and Pet Loss

A Heart Dog’s Legacy: Benjamin Bodger’s Story

Some dogs are loved from the moment they arrive. Before long, they’re just part of everything.

Benjamin was that dog for my husband, Tony. He was a Dudley Labrador, Tony’s constant companion and one of the great loves of our lives. Tony adored him, and Benjamin adored Tony right back.

He lived for fifteen and a half years. That is a long life when you count the birthdays, but it never feels long enough when the dog beside you has become family.

When Benjamin died, the veterinary care ended. The love didn’t.

The house changed around his absence. All the ordinary things were still there, but the dog who had given them their rhythm was gone. The place where he slept. The sounds we expected to hear. The little routines nobody thinks to call precious until they stop.

I began writing Beyond the Rainbow Bridge because I wanted to help Tony through the grief and give him somewhere to put some of that love.

At first, we were simply writing down the things we had learned from having Benjamin, from puppyhood right through to his passing. Then, while I was writing, I felt Benjamin sit on my lap, look me straight in the eye and say, “This is my story. It should be told from my perspective, with all the things I learned and taught you.”

It was such a clear moment.

From then on, the book became Benjamin’s account of the life we had shared, written from the perspective of the guardian angel we still felt him to be. The words flowed so easily that it felt almost miraculous.

The Photographs Took Longer

Going through fifteen and a half years of Benjamin’s life while Tony’s grief was still so raw wasn’t something to rush. Each picture held a whole moment. The muddy ones, the funny ones, the quiet ones where he was simply looking back at us, and all the ones with his precious ball. Together they reminded us that the final day was just one part of a much larger relationship.

The whole idea behind the book was to help Tony see past that final day and remember the joy and magic of having Benjamin in our lives. It wasn’t about moving on from Benjamin. It was about letting the relationship change shape, from the dog who was beside us every day to the love and memories that had become part of us.

Benjamin also helped re-inspire the Wet Dog Shake™, one of the simplest practices inside this work. Dogs don’t stand on the beach discussing the wave that just hit them. They shake, feel the sand under their paws and carry on with whatever’s right in front of them.

We Humans Often Keep Carrying the Whole Wave In Our Heads

The practice isn’t a way to shake off love or grief. Love was never the problem. It’s just a small physical reminder that the body can move while the mind is still telling the story, and that another moment is already here.

If you’ve ever had a heart dog, you probably know why the word pet can sometimes feel a bit too small. This was someone whose footsteps belonged in our home. Our fur baby. Someone who knew our moods and our routines. Someone whose life became part of our own.

Losing them hurts because the relationship mattered. And when the house goes quiet, the love still keeps reaching out towards all the places where they used to be.

Benjamin’s legacy lives in our books, the Wet Dog Shake™, Healing After Pet Loss, and every dog-shaped reminder to stop for a moment and notice the life that is still here.

But mostly, it lives in the way Tony still loves him. And how he now loves our new pups so much more deeply because Benjamin opened his heart.
